Gurdieff and circles. Everything in life is a circle. That's a fact, not a cliché. This week I read "In Search of the Miraculous", a book by and about P.D. Ouspensky and his quest for solutions to the problems of Man and the Universe that ultimately led him into an intense learning association with Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff and his teachings of what came to be known as The Fourth Way. I would not be so arrogant as to imply that I read with understanding. I would not purport to have even scratched the surface of the depth of Gurdjieff’s teachings in one week of reading one book. I will confess, however, that I was gripped by Gurdjieff and his teachings about the fundamental Laws of the Universe. In particular, I was excited about the law of seven or the law of octaves. Gurdjieff's teachings about vibrations, intervals, and octaves, explained to me how circles are created and how everything in life is a circle or part of a circle. I’ve heard the wisdom teachings that all life is a circle. I’ve looked around and seen evidence of physical circles in shapes of Moon and Sun, and have grasped the concept of circles of life regarding the seasons, the birth-death-rebirth, and so on, but those evidences of "circles" seemed unsatisfactory. I wanted more. I wondered, what did "all life is a circle" mean? I knew there had to be ancient, deeper meaning to the wisdom teachings of our ancestors. Within the pages of "In Search of the Miraculous", I felt Gurdjieff's circle. His explanation was profound; the subject of a later blog. Stay tuned. I recommend reading the book. (See description below)
Jubilant at my discovery, I laid down my book and turned on my computer with an intention of writing to a friend about Gurdjieff and circles. I had several e-mails, but for some reason unknown to me in the moment, one e-mail caught my attention and curiosity immediately. A soulful, creative, intuitive, artistic friend had sent me an attachment that she had sensed would be appropriate for me at that particular time in my life.
Imagine my delight when I opened the attachment and my screen was flooded with a beautiful circle of circles. She had no idea prior to spontaneously sending me her lovely art about my interest or study about circles. Indeed, evidence...all life is a circle. That's a fact.
